IHD/Developmental Psychology Colloquium: Panel Communicating Developmental Science—Opportunities for Positive Social Impact Panel Presenters: Alison Gopnik, Margaret Bridges; Moderator: Meghan Forder

February 10, 2020 • 12:10pm–1:30pm • 2121 Berkeley Way West, #1104 (BWW #1104)

Our IHD seminar series this semester will examine several different approaches to connecting developmental science to social impact. On Feb 10th the seminar considers the issue of successfully communicating developmental science to the public. On the one hand, there is growing recognition of the importance of communicating our science outside of academic audiences—to parents, teachers, and public audiences. On the other hand, these are considerable challenges and controversies, including how do maintain accuracy and precision while also making the science understandable, useful, and engaging. We will hear from Alison Gopnik—who has been extremely successful in advancing public understanding of developmental science through her successful books, essays, commentaries, presentations, and [column] in the Wall Street Journal. Additional commentary will be provided by Meghan Forder who is a communications expert who worked closely with the IHD in the communication of the Developmental Science of Adolescence. Margaret Bridges will introduce and moderate the session. The goal is for an interactive discussion.
