Mindset x Context: What we learned from a decade of psychological interventions to reduce inequality, and what's happening next
Just over ten years ago, the first evidence emerged that psychologically-precise interventions targeting adolescents' beliefs--or mindsets--could be delivered to large numbers of adolescents via the Internet and reduce disparities in developmental outcomes (e.g. achievement, healthy behavior, mental health). This allowed for the inclusion of larger, and more diverse, samples of participants in an increasing number of field experiments conducted over the last decade. What has been learned? This talk reviews the key findings from mindset science at scale, in particular highlighting the emerging evidence on the role of the context in supporting and sustaining the inequality-reducing benefits of an individually-targeted intervention. New research has examined the role of adults' mindsets in creating a culture that supports adolescents' adaptive mindsets, and has begun to discover how to influence adults' mindsets and behaviors effectively. The future of research in this area will therefore take a collaborative and interdisciplinary "Mindset x Context" approach to inequality reduction, by examining the synergistic effects of interventions that help young people adopt beneficial mindsets while also addressing adults' beliefs and behaviors that do or don't create cultures of inclusion.
