Abstract:
This panel discussion will address some of the compelling questions and controversies regarding adolescent mental health and well being amidst the global pandemic—particularly with respect to the amplified role of digital technology in creating opportunities and vulnerabilities. The panelists have great breadth of expertise relevant to these issues.
Candice Odgers is a developmental psychologist who has been leading interdisciplinary investigations advancing our understanding of the development of mental health and well-being. This work includes an emphasis on social inequalities and a strong focus on understanding the role of new technologies. This work is not only advancing insights into the ways new technologies are amplifying social inequities, but also, insights that can inform innovations for positive impact--by promoting social connection, learning, and healthy development.
Nick Allen is a clinical psychologist who is widely recognized for his work on the relationship between biological and interpersonal aspects of adolescent depression. His team has investigated the role of family interactions and factors such as abuse, stress, and socio-economic disadvantages in adolescent emotional health and functioning. A major focus of his current work focuses on innovative approaches to using digital technology to inform prevention and early intervention, including a large interdisciplinary program on digital mental health.
Please join us for this timely discussion of crucially important issues, amidst this turbulent period of rapid changes and challenges facing so many adolescents and their families.
